Retriever Rescue

Hello everyone

We are new to the forum. We are looking at getting a goldie, possibly a rescue, and thought we would say hi and see if you can offer advice for us.

We currently don't have any pets, but have both had dogs in the past. Joe has had a Boxer (Nero) and a rescue Collie Cross called Mick and Laura has had a Golden retriever called Monty who went to rainbow bridge at the age of 9 in 2004. Laura's parents have got a 7-year old Golden Retriever called Amber and a 4-year-old Flat-coated Retriever called Darcy.

We have recently been dogsitting Amber and Darcy and have realised how much we need a dog in our lives, as we've never had a dog together, and sadly we cannot have children.

Joe is concerned at getting a puppy as has never had one and possibly a rescue might be a good idea.

We hope to find out lots about your lovely doggies and a bit about you all.

hello joe and laura. welcome to the site. all i will say is if you are willing to put in the time and effort with a dog like these goldens, then go for it. rescue dogs can be a lot like puppies in that they will probably require quite a lot of training but they can make the most fantastic companions if a bit willful at times to say the least. i would advise you to ring jan and speak to her about the pro's and cons of a rescue dog over a pup though and see what you think then.

As already stated Jan is the one to ask about rescue Goldens. I have recently gone through having a new puppy, following the loss of my Daisy nearly two years ago now. I was torn between rescue and a puppy, particularly as I have my other Golden Jazz to consider. I would not change Merlin for the world, who is 1 next month, but you do forget how much work they are and that they are into everything and can't be left for even a minute! Whichever you choose they will need your time and attention, as you will know. What is also guaranteed is unconditional love and endless joy. Really it comes down to your individual circumstances.

We agree that your first action should be to call Jan,she has more experience of goldens than anyone. puppies or rescue.
Either way they are pack animals who do not like to be left alone for long periods. Our two, Jazz and Candy are both from Jan and neither has been a problem.
Just give Jan a call and if you decide to join the rest of the besotted rescue owners on the site, there is a massive support group out there.
