My Story

Post by dragonslair »

I am new to this forum, indeed to any doggie forum. My story is a sad one and I would like to know from all you goldie lovers out there if I am making the right choice.
We have in our family 2 teenagers, 5 cats(all rescued). I have always had dogs (Border Collies). Sadly just before Christmas23/12/09, we had to put our 2 year old Border Collie to sleep. She developed what specialists call a degenerative bone disease. She went through numerous x-rays and MRI scans. The ortho surgeon then gave the final prognosis that he would amputate Willow's front leg but the disease would probably progress within a matter of weeks. It was his advice that she be put at rest and out of pain. Willow was my wife's dog(bitch). My wife works at a nature reserve at Catterick Garrison. N.Yorks.(http://www.foxglovecovert.org.uk) Prior to this incident our previous Border Collie was accidentally killed when someone at the reserve threw a stick for her and she went after it and the stick went straight down her throat and punctured her insides. Despite emergency treatment she died in surgery. We had her for 11 years. Prior to that our other Collies died of old age!
So to break the bad feng sui, we thought that we would like to own/adopt a golden retriever. Mainly because of their loving nature and because my wife will be taking the goldie to work every day. So she will be meeting and greeting people and other dogs. My wife works most days of the week so goldie will be there as was Willow.
Just like some feedback from you as to the fact am I making the right decision in getting a goldie. I have always loved people with retrievers...or loved their dogs :love5
I would welcome any suggestions you would like to make ..good or bad....

Only you can make this decision on your own.

Hello Dragonslair,

We've had dogs all our life, but only goldens since 1976, and now goldens are the only dogs for us, some people have said 'don't you compare your past dogs with your current dogs, no we don't, we reminisce about our previous dogs, when they did this or that and have never compared any dogs, they are all different. As Jan says only you can decide if a golden retriever is for you, Jan chose Ginnie and Cobi for us in 2000 and 2005, :1971 we wish you well whether you choose a golden or any other rescue dog.

I have to agree with Lynda and Jan here.
We too have had dogs all our lives. We also had a Border Collie for 14yrs. Our last two have been Goldens, one from a breeder and Ella who came to us 5yrs ago from Jan.

All have enriched our lives in their own different ways
Whatever you choose to do, we wish you well.

Only three things to say if you're used to border collies:

1. If you're taking a dog to work, be aware that not all goldies have the world's best recall so don't assume anything until you know your dog's habits. Maggie's fine most of the time but she's also an 'everybody' dog who periodically takes to random strangers and follows them.

2. In spite of being called retrievers, they don't all actually retrieve anything - which might be a good thing in light of your previous experiences.

3. In spite of being called golden, which might suggest a surface veneer, they are actually 100% 24 carat pure gold - fanstastic temperament, very individual and every one pure gold all the way through.

Good luck with your choice of a new dog - whatever you decide to go with.

Sorry to hear of your sad story. I know what it fels like to lose a dog.
I recently adopted a lovely 18 month old golden from Jan and she is the sweetest dog and has loads of love to give as we do for her.
I hope you find the right one for you.
