we had to take poppy to the vet a couple of weeks ago ( bottom gland stuff) and she was so surprised to see her. She couldn't believe that she was the dog she came out to see who was on her last legs, and those were her words.
Alan retired at the end of April so now they are both happy oldies together. (only joking).
Can i just ask something of other adopters. Poppy really doesn't play. She loves cuddles but when we take her for walks she has no idea about fetching a ball, ( so I usually end up running after it). we have lots of pull toys but she just doesnt know how to play pull. we have managed to get her to play hunt the bonio. Our dogs have always loved to play. do you think some dogs just dont want to play, or is it that they havent been played with from being young. I think because of the work that i do i am thinking of her in terms of a vulnerable child.
any thoughts on this?

Re: poppy doing well
Hi Julia, lovely to hear that Poppy is doing so well.
On the subject of play some Goldens never want to play or fetch a ball like people they have their own little ways.
Others may have never been played with or had any toys. I wouldn't worry about it as long as she is happy that's all that matters.

Re: poppy doing well
Hello Julia, glad to hear that Poppy is OK, any more photographs of her please ?
Most of our dogs have never brought a ball back or anything thrown for them, with the exception of one of those floating kongs on a rope (we never throw a stick, but Cobi had found one on the photographs, and Ginnie decided to chase her) nowadays if Ginnie finds a ball she will carry it all the way back to the car or home.
All of our dogs have played together, but as Jan says they have their own ways..... same as us. Mum's first 'golden' Gemma didn't even like her own daughter Jade for several months and we were concerned that they weren't going to be friends. Ceili and Abby were pals, up until Abby thought Ceili might be winning then it was 'game over'.
Jasmine wasn't sure how to play with other dogs, so she just usually dug a pebble up and dived on top of it !!!
Without doubt Ginnie and Cobi (from Jan)are the best pals.... no holds barred when they play, my friends golden Megan joins in, more so with Cobi which gives Ginnie a rest, it's only been in the the last 12 years that our dogs have had soft toys, they had nylabones, sweaky toys, balls on ropes (the other evening Cobi picked up a ball on a rope, and bashed Ginnie with it and then dragged her out of her basket, then probably wished she hadn't, Ginnie stood four square over her, and wouldn't let go of the ball, even though her jaws were 'trembling' Cobi had to give in eventually, Ginnie then took her trophy back to her basket)

Re: poppy doing well

Great to hear that Poppy is doing well.
Like Poppy, Ella isn't all that keen on playing with a ball. She will run to where it lands, but will leave it, prefering to just sniff around. When in the house, she just loves to walk around with a soft toy in her mouth. When she came to live with us, she didn't know how to play, and it took time for her to realise it's ok to play.
She just want's to be with us.....and that's more than ok

Poppy sounds to be a very happy Golden......I wouldn't worry.
Re: poppy doing well
Thank you for your replies. i loved the story about Ginnie and Cobi, that is so funny. Poppy has a couple of kongs that we can put squirty food into and she loves those. I suppose because our 2 other dogs so enjoyed playing pull I feel that she is missing out, but she is definitely very happy.
She loves to go into Antonias bedroom, which is downstairs, and steal anything she can find on the floor. She so obviously knows it is naughty but we tell her off in such a laughing way she also knows its a bit of fun too. so we are not good dog parents.
I think I have said before that she dotes on David my 14 yr old, he rarely feeds or walks her but she adores him. I will send a picture soon.
Jan - Once again thank you for sending us Princess Poppy .

Julia
We have broken probably every rule in the book, (except giving them chocolate) ..... and I have laughed till I've cried with my legs crossed at some of the things our dogs have done in the past.... even Cobi when she rolls in something horrible, I can't be cross with her, I just thank Jan for finding such a perfect little pal for Ginnie and us.

Re: poppy doing well
My Poppy never plays with the pull rope toy either. It was actually bought for Honey on the day she came home and she didn't touch it.
Poppy has a collection of tennis balls that she likes to leave around the house (just were you can trip on them ), if we throw it she will collect it but usually won't bring it back, she just likes to carry them around. She also has a couple of the smaller cloth toys that she likes to carry around.
She adores squeaky toys either rubber or cloth ones and can give you a fine old tune with them, sometimes a whole concert. She'll bring them to greet you or show but doesn't like to let go - unless of course I can offer something better.

Re: poppy doing well
Like others have said I too wouldnt worry to much, maybe she doesnt like to play when out, as maybe there are lovely smells about which are more important than play.?
they are all different my Lucy will fetch and play ball all day long if she could Paddy will play but if he catches a nice smell he will go off exploring instead...so go with the flow and just enjoy, whatever you do though dont feel sorry for her, just enjoy her and maybe one day she will surprise you...
