Hi everyone
Please can you help at all. Oscar has developed a habit for digging our garden which is gravel and a patio - he has almost destroyed the lining under the gravel and has started to dig the soil underneath. It's a daily occurence.
He's getting either 2 40 min walks or a long walk each day. He's never left alone for more than a couple of hours and he's played with several times a day as Joe doesn't work.
What is the best course of action to nip this in the bud - is he just testing our patience or is he bored??
Thanks
L&J

OH THE MEMORIES!! milo used to love digging. the mud used to be thick in his paws. it used to drive us mad. if we were on a field he would actually dig a trench and then lie in it and start snorting into it. we did tell him off a couple of times but NO! definately did not work for us so i can't help you on any cure i'm afraid but milo was digging up to a couple of weeks before he died. he also had regular walks and i was at home with young children.
the only thing i will say is that i found that as he got older i found it really cute when he lifted his head up from one of his holes and it was covered in bits of mud because you knew it was something that just made him really happy and he actually had a puppiness about him. i know it won't help you at the moment but one day you might find it endearing.
good luck

Hi.
I have never had a serious problem with digging, but I can recommend a way to limit the damage by allowing him to dig in a certain place. Do you have a patch of the garden he could dig and you wouldn't mind or somwhere you could set up an enclosed area and fill with sand or play bark? My dogs have a toileting area which is covered with bark and my youngest sometimes digs in that. Good luck!

Hi Laura, my first rescue dog a German Shepherd (Max) enjoyed digging, especially one area of the garden, where there was an old lining, once we removed that he was fine, some linings do appeal to dogs more than others, especially the "aromatic type". Good luck,
steve.
